Letter from Sellers

Dear Home Buyers,

Almost six years ago, we went searching for our first house and were so happy to find this one. We were living in the Mission but always knew we wanted to settle down in Berkeley, where years earlier we had met in law school and fallen in love with the East Bay and each other. We especially hoped something would open up in this cute South Berkeley neighborhood close to a few of our good friends. For over a year, Deidre helped us look at the dozens of houses that popped up nearby. The first time we saw 3108 King, we knew it was finally the one. (It was the first and only house we ever bid on.)

The house checked off so many things on our wishlist: 

  • Lots of natural light: giant windows in the living room, kitchen, and rear bedroom, with gentle morning light in the front of the house and more direct afternoon sun in the rear;
  • Original details: intricate beveled glass windows, a coffered ceiling, as well as a coved ceiling, wainscotting, a window bench with a secret hiding place, and large, working pocket doors; 
  • Room to grow: five full bedrooms, open-concept common areas, and a spacious basement and attic that could eventually be finished for more indoor living space.

The location has been so good for us. It took us just 5 minutes to walk to Ashby Bart and then was a quick ride to the city—a great commute, but, more importantly, all our friends in the city could easily come visit us any night of the week for the many dinner parties, book clubs, beer and cheese tastings, watch parties, and backyard BBQs that we hosted. We’re very social people, and it was great to be so easily accessible to our friends.

We’re on a peaceful, tree-lined street that’s also a designated “bicycle boulevard,” with limited traffic and noise, especially at night. Alcatraz and Adeline are just a few short blocks away and offer a corridor of local shops and restaurants to explore. On weekends we used to go to nearby coffee shops, restaurants like Easy Creole and Lemat, Adeline Yoga, and occasionally some of the little antique and vintage shops. A leisurely stroll to the South Berkeley Farmers’ Market became one of our weekly rituals. Berkeley Bowl has the best fresh produce and was also a pleasant, easy walk for us. 

This is a very “neighborhoody” neighborhood. You’ll notice that, at any given time, there are nice people doing something somewhere along the street: walking their dogs, riding their bikes, gardening, jogging, or playing with their kids. They’ll usually wave or say hi as they pass. Every year (pre-COVID) there’s a neighborhood block party by Malcolm X Elementary, and surrounding families bring their home-cooked dishes or musical instruments to play for each other. We’ll especially miss our two nextdoor neighbors, Gina and Marcus, who have lived here for 40 years. They welcomed us into the neighborhood and literally know everyone on the block. They’re very warm, thoughtful, and easy going. Really, they're just the sweetest neighbors we’ve ever had, and we hope whoever moves here feels as welcomed and at home as we did.

One gift that we’re so happy to leave to our first home and its new owners is our garden. When we first moved in, we loved the giant walnut tree standing outside the kitchen windows, but the rest of the yard was a little overgrown. Over the years, we worked with a local landscape designer to cultivate new flowers, plants, vines, and trees, many of which have sentimental value from our childhoods. For extra privacy, we planted a row of tall bamboo, which we personally sourced from Bamboo Sourcery in Marin. We also planted tiny succulent gardens in barrels on the sidewalk. Everything is fully irrigated and relatively low maintenance. The flowers are a delight throughout the spring and summer (see some pics here). We hope this garden gets lots of extra company during quarantine.

While our lives have changed so much and we’ve since moved away, we want the next owners to know that this has been a home filled with love and connection. We have so many cherished memories here. We wish you, the next owners, the same good fortune.

You can't get closer to the University of California, Berkeley campus than South Berkeley, the neighborhood originally developed in the 1860s by the school’s predecessor, the College of California. The latter institution may be long gone, but the large, spacious, brown-shingled homes along Allston, Bancroft, Channing, and Dwight ways remain. Densely populated, the neighborhood contains some of the city’s oldest homes. South Berkeley is a mix of students, longtime residents, businesses, and homes. The major thoroughfares are Telegraph Avenue, Bancroft Way, and Alcatraz Avenue, where street vendors, bookstores, record shops, and inexpensive eateries cater to students. Nightlife is abundant, thanks to the proximity to campus, Zellerbach Hall, and Downtown Berkeley. Both the Ashby and Downtown Berkeley BART stations serve the neighborhood, as do a number of Alameda-Contra Costa Transit buses, making it a snap to get to downtown San Francisco, local airports, sports stadiums, and other locations in the Bay Area.
